In a ground-breaking collaboration, Axiom Space x Prada, a renowned Italian luxury fashion brand and a premier commercial space enterprise, have started on a pioneering initiative to create NASA’s lunar spacesuits for the Artemis III mission.
At the intersection of luxury and space exploration, Axiom Space x Prada pioneers commercial space endeavors, striving to establish a thriving human presence beyond our planet. They lead in human spaceflight services, currently managing missions to the International Space Station while developing their groundbreaking successor, Axiom Station, the world’s first commercial space station in low-Earth orbit. This ambitious project promises to sustain human expansion beyond Earth. In an intriguing juxtaposition, Prada, the renowned Milanese fashion house founded in 1913, blends traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology in a wide range of products, including clothing, accessories, and fragrances, with a global reach. Collaborating with visionaries such as Rem Koolhaas, Herzog & de Meuron, Damien Hirst, Nicolas Winding Refn, and Wes Anderson, Prada crafts immersive experiences and innovative fashion while championing sustainability through eco-friendly materials and production methods.
The upcoming Artemis III mission, scheduled for 2025, is a historic endeavor, marking the first crewed lunar landing since Apollo 17 in 1972 and the first mission to place a woman on the Moon.
“We are thrilled to partner with Prada on the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit,” said Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space. “Prada’s technical expertise in materials and manufacturing, coupled with their innovative design concepts, will ensure the comfort of astronauts on the lunar surface, addressing human factors absent from legacy spacesuits.”
Prada’s engineers will collaborate with Axiom Space’s systems team throughout the design process, focusing on materials and design features that can withstand the rigors of space and the lunar environment.
“The forward-thinking ethos of Prada extends to the desire for adventure and pushing boundaries into space,” remarked Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group Marketing Director. “We are honored to be part of this historic mission with Axiom Space, where our decades of experimentation, cutting-edge technology, and design expertise will be applied to crafting spacesuits for the Artemis era. This collaboration represents the power of human creativity and innovation in advancing civilization.”
The AxEMU spacesuit promises increased space exploration capabilities, giving NASA with commercially built human systems required for lunar missions. The Axiom Space spacesuits, which are based on NASA’s investigation Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) spacesuit design, provide more flexibility, enhanced protection against severe lunar conditions, and specialized instruments for scientific investigation. These ground-breaking spacesuits will allow for unprecedented investigation of the lunar surface.
The development of these next-generation spacesuits is a remarkable milestone, propelling space exploration to new heights and fostering a deeper understanding of the Moon, the solar system, and beyond.
In a collaboration that marries luxury and space exploration, Axiom Space x Prada are redefining lunar fashion, setting the stage for a remarkable era of lunar exploration that combines style, innovation, and advanced technology.
