Breguet Type XX: Reviving a Timeless Legend with Innovation and History

A resurrected legend.

Breguet Type XX, a name that resonates with aviation enthusiasts and watch connoisseurs alike, has been revived with a perfect blend of history and innovation. As we delve into the world of Breguet’s iconic Type XX collection, we witness the reincarnation of a legend. The year 2023 marks the arrival of the new generation models, each equipped with the groundbreaking Calibre 728. Let’s embark on a journey to explore the rich heritage, cutting-edge features, and the enduring allure of the Breguet Type XX watches.

The Legacy of the Type XX
The Breguet Type XX can be traced back to the early 1950s, when Breguet replied to air force demands for a durable wrist chronograph with specified features. Many pilots, aviation corporations, and organizations have welcomed the Type XX for its accuracy, dependability, and functionality since then. Breguet’s dedication to airborne navigation echoes its historic contributions to marine navigation in the nineteenth century. The Type XX has gone through various versions over the years, catering to both military and civilian clients.

Aeronautical Influence and Specialized Timekeeping
Keeping precise track of time is crucial for pilots and aircrew members, given the intense activity and stress of aviation environments. Breguet recognized this need early on and developed specialized timepieces tailored to the aeronautical industry. From the 1930s onwards, Breguet introduced a range of highly technical watches, including aerodrome chronometers, on-board chronographs, and chronograph wristwatches, designed to enhance accuracy and convenience for aviation professionals. Over the years, Breguet became renowned for delivering watchmaking instruments for aircraft instrument panels, cementing its expertise in the field.

The Evolution of Type XX
Throughout its history, the Type XX has undergone numerous iterations. From the 1950s until the 1970s, the Type XX had little cosmetic alterations while increasing popularity with military and civilian consumers. The Type XX saw a resurgence in 1995, with the launch of third-generation models that included modern features and self-winding movements. Subsequent variants, such as the Type XXI and Type XXII, pushed the boundaries of technology and chronometry. Breguet continued to develop with new materials, styles, and limited editions, retaining the Type XX’s charm and relevance.

Introducing the Type 20 Chronographe 2057 and Type XX Chronographe 2067
The highly anticipated new generation Type XX models are the Type 20 Chronographe 2057 and the Type XX Chronographe 2067. The 2057 draws inspiration from the military Type 20 watches delivered to the French Air Force in the 1950s. It features a modernized black dial, luminescent Arabic numerals and hands, and a larger 30-minute totalizer. The 2067, influenced by the civilian Type XX models of the 1950s and 1960s, showcases a black dial with ivory-colored luminescent details and includes a 15-minute totalizer, a 12-hour totalizer, and running seconds. Both models boast a 42 mm steel case with a bidirectional bezel, self-winding movements, and a “flyback” function.

The Innovative Calibre 728
The revolutionary Calibre 728, developed after four years of research and protected by many patents, is housed in the latest generation Type XX timepieces. This self-winding movement has a column wheel, a vertical clutch, a 5 Hz frequency, and a zero-resetting activation system. It uses silicon components, which are known for their resistance to corrosion, wear, and magnetic fields, resulting in better precision. The Calibre 728 combines toughness and precision with a power reserve of 60 hours. The movement’s aesthetic appeal is reinforced by painstaking embellishment, such as black DLC treatment on the column wheel and a blackened oscillating weight styled like an airplane wing.

The Breguet Type XX collection has captivated aviation enthusiasts for nearly seven decades. With the introduction of the new generation Type XX watches and their innovative Calibre 728, Breguet reaffirms its commitment to excellence, precision, and craftsmanship. These timepieces pay homage to the brand’s rich heritage while embracing contemporary design and cutting-edge technology. Whether you’re a pilot, aviation aficionado, or watch connoisseur, the Type XX continues to be a symbol of enduring elegance and exceptional timekeeping in the world of aviation.
