THAT Gucci has serious horologic intents should not be surprising; under the Kering S. A. luxury group (since 1999) the brand is actually a peer to Swiss watchmakers Girard-Perregaux, JeanRichard and Ulysse Nardin. In the last couple of years Gucci brought out an automatic GMT. Gucci is even a Baselworld fixture.

Ahead of this year’s edition of the Swiss watch and jewelry spectacle, Gucci has bolstered its G-Timeless Automatic line with three new variants housed in 40-millimeter-wide cases. And unlike some of the collection’s earlier renditions, the new pieces present an alternative take on some of the brand’s design codes.

A product of Gucci’s quirky and talented creative director Alessandro Michele, the G-Timeless collection first appeared on models’ wrists during Gucci’s SS16 show. The pieces wore the honeybee motif — and not at all shyly at that — meant by Michele to become as identifiably Gucci as the interlocking Gs, horsebit loafers and red-and-green stripes are. Succeeding renditions have incorporated various brand signatures, counting in feline heads and a snake.

The new G-Timeless Automatics are subtler than usual, with the watches using a combination of triangular indices, stars and honeybees. A feline head sits at 12 o’clock. Some classic horologic touches have made it to the watches, too, namely a small second subdial at 6 o’clock, deep guilloche dial, and a fluted bezel. While all have steel cases water-resistant to 50 meters, they each differ in color schemes and dial furniture material.

One of the watches mixes its silver dial with steel indices and a red leather strap, another combines together a blue dial, yellow gold indices and a blue leather strap, while a third matches a silver dial to yellow gold PVD bezel and indices, and a white leather strap. All are topped by sapphire crystals.

Beating within them is the self-winding ETA 2895 movement, which has 27 jewels and oscillates at 28,800vph. In the G-Timeless Automatic, this ticker also receives bits of decorations simply because, well, Gucci is seriously into watch making.
