Plume Performance

The Grand Seiko Hi-Beat 36000 Limited Edition: SBGJ227

The new Grand Seiko takes inspiration from a magnificent source of nature’s beauty.

The peacock has some of the most stunning plumage of all the birds in the world. The incredible display that it puts on is iridescent and breathtaking. And Grand Seiko is seeking to emulate this display in their new Hi-beat 36000 GMT Limited Edition SBGJ227 timepiece.

With this new watch, Grand Seiko gives us a green dial with a stamped pattern that recalls the verdant color of the peacock. The new Hi-beat 36000’s case and movement have a strong track record already, as they were the same ones found in the celebrated watch that won the “Petite Aiguille” award prize at the Grand Prix de Genève in 2014. Now, the case and movement are united again, assembled at the Shizukuishi Watch Studio, the home of all of Grand Seiko’s mechanical watches.

The Grand Seiko Hi-Beat 36000 Limited Edition

At the Shizukuishi Studio, Grand Seiko’s craftsmen and craftswomen manufacture and hand-assemble these highly accurate watches. But watchmaking is not all science: there is an art to it as well. And here is where the dial design of the new Grand Seiko really shines. Or perhaps we should really say, it glows.

The peacock is outstanding to every culture that encounters it. Some cultures believe that the peacock represents immortality. To others, tellingly, the bird symbolizes renewal; not eternal life, but eternal rejuvenation. Perhaps the lesson of the peacock is that no matter how much life wears you down, there is always a means to re-energize yourself. Or perhaps the third view is correct: to some, the peacock symbolizes all-seeing eyes, a notion that is no doubt inspired by the many oval shapes visible on the extended tail feathers.

The distortion-free surfaces are achieved with Zaratsu polishing, a technique that requires the greatest skill and hand craftsmanship.

But watchmaking is not all science: there is an art to it as well. And here is where the dial design of the new Grand Seiko really shines.

Whatever your beliefs, the enchanting pattern of the new Grand Seiko Hi-beat 36000 GMT Limited Edition SBGJ227 will catch the eye of all who behold it. And the lucky owner will have a daily source of inspiration. Some displays are meant to be seen by everyone, but never underestimate the power of beauty just for yourself.
