Fire on the Wing

The great winged beasts of legend come to life on the dial.

Vacheron Constantin pays tribute to the dragon hovering over us all.

Vacheron Constantin is well-known for their wonderfully-crafted art watches. These timepieces have taken their inspiration from cultural sources all over the world. Dance masks from Asia, tribal coming-of-age ceremonial headpieces from Africa, lacquerwork from feudal Japan… art can come from anywhere, and Vacheron Constantin sources inspiration from all of mankind.

“… art can come from anywhere, and Vacheron Constantin sources inspiration from all of mankind.”

Now, Vacheron Constantin turns their eyes to the East. Many have done so, some seeking wisdom, others to find wealth. Some, indeed, are struck dumb by the Dragon, and find themselves humbled. In the face of power it is easy to lose your tongue, and to be amazed into thinking there can be but one response. But Vacheron Constantin looked East and found that pearl beyond price… inspiration.

Vacheron Constantin’s release of their Traditionelle 14-Day Tourbillon “Dragon” is a lovely envisioning of that mythical beast and its beauty. The Dragon is rendered in 18 karat gold, with the case to match. The limited edition 8-piece series has hours and minutes hands, and there is a tourbillon spinning sixty seconds round, that serves as a second counter. There is also a 14-day power reserve display at 12 o’clock. And of course, there is the dragon, floating above the golden clouds, twisting sinuously through the air as it holds sway over those below it.

“…a lovely envisioning of that mythical beast and its beauty.”

As mentioned earlier, Vacheron Constantin is a master at creating these artistic timepieces. Hand-engraving such an imposing figure of mythology is no doubt daunting, but the craftsmen of Vacheron Constantin are certainly equal to the task. The dragon here is portrayed in a full-body pose, seen complete as it winds across the dial. Perhaps it is best that it remains at a distance; many of the great forces of nature are best seen so, and not up close.

Of course, with such a desirable limited edition, competition for these timepieces is going to be intense, and the lucky few are going to feel lucky indeed.

But even so, you ought to be careful. Everyone wants to master fire. But people forget that fire masters you.
