Woof!

MB&F Lets Out their Latest Object of Affection

Having had a dog present in my life for several past decades, I still found it quite difficult to relate to how man’s best friend became Max Büsser’s inspiration for their latest timepiece, the Horological Machine Number 10 or more affectionately referred to as “Bulldog”. But, once the similarities to Canis lupus familiaris became evident, such as the rounded compact body and glaring aluminum display “eyes”, the Bulldog in the HM10 jumps out.

Just like its namesake, there’s more to HM No. 10 Bulldog than meets the eye. Its hinged jaws open and shut according to the amount of wind left in its mainspring — a fully closed mouth tells you that “Bulldog” is wound down and ready for a nap. If you can clearly see the rows of shining teeth lining the jaws, get ready, because that means “Bulldog” is full of fight, charged up with a 45 hours of mainspring energy. This massive power-reserve indication has been carefully designed and calibrated to consume the least energy possible, allowing HM No. 10 Bulldog to direct its considerable mainspring torque solely towards its suspended balance and its revolving hour and minute domes. The in-house designed and developed 301-component mechanics powering the HM No.10 is entirely new but derives confluence from past creations. For or example, the very unique balance, suspended beneath the central sapphire crystal dome and beating at the traditional cadence of 2.5Hz (18,000vph), first appeared in an MB&F creation in 2011, with the debut of Legacy Machine N°1. Any longtime follower of the brand would also notice that the revolving time indicators of the HM No. 10 bear a striking resemblance to that of the conical hour and minute modules of the HM No.3 “Frog”.

To someone who comes across a Bulldog walking down the street, it may seem intimidating at first sight. But to its human, it is an adorable big baby. Same with the MB&F “Bulldog” in tha in spite of its outsized personality — measuring 45mm across, 54mm from nose to tail and with a maximum height of 24mm — HM No.10 Bulldog is surprisingly wearable. Its sprung strap attachment “legs” allow the body to fit closely around the wrist, with the calf-leather strap as robust as any well- made leash — fastened with either a folding buckle or Velcro system.

Owners of the new HM No.10 “Bulldog” would probably guard their watches as zealously as the canine would protect its family. As such, the folks at MB&F have playfully added the caption “Forget the dog beware of the owner” on the watch’s caseback.
