The Trinity

Panerai’s Makes Use of New Materials on Three Special PAMs

Italian watchmaker Panerai was founded in 1860 and for quite a time, the Florence-based the watchmaking school and workshop supplied the Italian navy particularly its specialist diving corps with precision instruments. Most of the cutting-edge research and advancements designers had made were covered by the Military Secrets Acts for many years including work on the Luminor and Radiomir watches that we are all familiar with today. While the Panerai brand was only launched on the international market some 130 years later when Panerai was acquired by the Richemont Group, the generations of watchmakers that soldiered on developing and evolving the watches with a combination of Italian design flair and Swiss horological expertise was always at the apex of haute horlogerie.

Today, Panerai unveils a trio of watches that highlight the brand’s use of new materials to create timepieces that possess a rare combination of innovation and tradition to create professional diving watches with unique aesthetics.

Panerai Submersible Goldtech™ Orocarbo 44mm (PAM 1070)
Combining two innovative materials namely Panerai Goldtech and Carbotech for the first though it may seem antithetical, the resulting Panerai Submersible Goldtech makes a strong case that a fine line between elegance and boldness can be achieved. The new 44mm reference character comes alive thanks to a case made from Panerai Goldtech, a gold alloy with an intense and stable color made possible by its significant copper content and enrichment with platinum. The dial features applied indexes and satiné soleil decoration, an unconventional
embellishment in the Submersible collection. For the bold component of the watch, a material was chosen to give shape and substance to functional bits such as the bezel, crown and crown bridge lever. Known as Carbotech, this composite consists of overlapping carbon fiber sheets with alternating orientations (seven per millimeter), aggregated using controlled temperature and high pressure and fused with a late-generation polymer binder.

Inside the novel case, timekeeping is handled by a P.900 Caliber movement. Developed entirely by Panerai, the movement features a date indication and a 3-day power reserve. The watch is water resistant to 300 meters and features a black rubber strap with a trapezoidal pin buckle made from titanium with black DLC coating.

Panerai Submersible Azzuro 42mm (PAM 1209) Limited Edition Available Online Only
Having first built its reputation on mastery of the specialized diving watch category, Panerai returns to its origins with the development of a new professional instrument: Submersible Azzurro – 42 mm (PAM01209), made in only 500 pieces and available exclusively on the panerai.com ecommerce platform.

Developed to merge technical performance and substance with proven knowhow, the new Submersible unifies its aesthetic and functional dimensions by displaying a fitting color on the opaque ceramic disc of the bezel: blue, a hue that instantly evokes the sea. Since the very beginning, water has been the brand’s distinctive element and blue has been Italy’s unofficial national color since its unification, a milestone reached just a few months after the opening of Giovanni Panerai’s first historic Florentine shop. Calibrated to meet the demanding specifications required of watches intended to with stand extreme pressure, the new Submersible Azzurro – 42 mm features a unidirectional rotating bezel, screwed case back and the iconic bridge device to protect the crown. Luminescent indexes, hands and dots glow in a green-blue hue for ease of underwater legibility. Powered by the venerable in-house developed P.900 self-winding movement, the Azzuro is a highly accurate and water-resistant watch and the first to have a movement with a thickness of 4.2mm to combine the date function with a three-day power reserve.

The new Submersible Azzuro 42mm features a sporty black rubber strap with a brushed steel trapezoidal pin buckle. It also comes with a second strap finished in black Sportech Velcro together with a tool to change straps with as well a screwdriver to remove the buckle.

Panerai Luminor Luna Rossa GMT 42 mm (PAM 1096) – Limited Edition of 250
As a supplement to the Luminor Luna Rossa GMT 44mm launched earlier this year, the new Luminor Rossa elevates the reputation of this collection created to reinforce Panerai’s role as the Official Sponsor of the Luna Rossa Team in their bid to bring home the America’s Cup Trophy next year with the addition of a new and novel material: Scafotech. This sustainable composite material is made from the carbon fiber residue collected from the hull and hydrofoils of the Italian team’s AC75 racing yacht. The collected material has been repurposed and forged into a high-tech polymer for use as the watch dial. Scafotech endows each watch dial with a unique and singular appearance due to its variegated texture. Sharing the same properties as that of Carbotech, the Luna Rossa GMT 42mm will be able to handle all the rigors and extreme conditions associated with the America’s Cup.

Just as Team Luna Rossa is associated with the red Prada logo, the signature color highlights both the small seconds and triangular GMT hands of the Luminor Luna Rossa GMT – 42 mm. Furthermore, a dedicated inscription is affixed on the dial and a personalized engraving is visible on the titanium caseback featuring an image of the America’s Cup trophy.

Water-resistant to 100 meters, the watch features the Caliber P.9010 with GMT designed and developed entirely by Panerai. The self-winding movement is equipped with two barrels to store the energy required for a three-day power reserve and a rapid time adjustment system automatically connected to the date indicator.
