Rolex, Federer Set To Ace Wimbledon

Other Testimonees boost watchmaker’s presence at center court

WITH a history stretching back to 1877, it isn’t surprising that The Championship, Wimbledon, embraces heritage and tradition — it still even sticks to the “tennis whites” dress code dictated during the era in which the tournament was born. And it’s a strict code, this. Players must wear an all-white attire when they step onto the court. Color accents on clothes? Yes, these are permitted, so long as these strips are no wider than a centimeter.

But the Wimbledon deserves to impose this rule of etiquette; it is the oldest and most prestigious tournament in tennis.

Federer

Ongoing now until July 14 at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, the 133rd edition of the grass-court classic is again having Rolex as its official timekeeper. It is a role Rolex has played since 1978. And the reason this partnership has lasted this long is because Wimbledon and Rolex are both steeped in tradition and excellence.

Actually, it was this alliance with Wimbledon that got the ball rolling for Rolex’s affiliation with tennis. In time the watchmaker got into the groove of the game. It began supporting other prestigious tennis events, like all Grand Slam tournaments (besides Wimbledon, the three others are the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open). It also backed champions of the sport. some of whom hit it big on Wimbledon’s courts.

Federer

Like Roger Federer. A Rolex Testimonee, Federer now counts 20 Wimbledon appearances. Ten years ago he claimed his sixth title and what is regarded as his greatest Grand Slam victory at Wimbledon. Since then Federer took two more Wimbledon titles, bringing his total to eight. He now has more Wimbledon men’s singles titles that any other in tennis history.

This year Federer is joined at the All England Club by other Rolex Testimonees who also know what it’s like to win at Wimbledon. Among them are reigning ladies’ singles champion Angelique Kerber and 2017 winner Garbiñe Muguruza.

Completing the Testimonee tribe at Wimbledon are Sloane Stephens, Caroline Wozniacki and Dominic Thiem. Stephens was the 2017 US Open winner, Wozniacki captured her first major title at the 2018 Australian Open, and Thiem has now appeared in two consecutive Roland-Garros finals. They have the skills to conquer Wimbledon’s center court.

While dressed in tennis whites, of course.
