Paean To Pulchritude

Third Intersect By Lexus lifestyle hub opens in New York City’s hip meatpacking district

IN a quiet corner of Tokyo’s upscale Aoyama district sits the first Intersect by Lexus, the brand’s concrete (and glass, steel, wood, etc.) rendition of its pursuit of luxury and design. The Tokyo place is detailed with monochromatic ceramic tiles and wood paneling and metal surfaces. Here, artsy books and framed artsy pictures appear randomly arrayed, but these are likely as meticulously curated as the coffee in the Norwegian bar on the ground floor is. The designer apparel and other items sold at the shop swank about in high style. On the wall by the stairway stands an all-white, glass-encased bas relief sculpture fashioned out of various car parts. Every square inch of this place has obviously been lavished with thought.

Not surprisingly, the next Intersect by Lexus set up in Dubai is just as meticulously designed, just as artsy, but adds a new gastronomic dimension via a proper restaurant. Now, a third Intersect by Lexus is set to finally open. The new place mixes the designer vibe and dining experience of the two previous ones, but now is infused with a thoroughly hipster attitude; it is, after all, located in New York City’s meatpacking district.

Called by the luxury carmaker as a “lifestyle hub,” the soon-to-open New York digs is promised to be a “unique cultural space where ideas and people converge.” It encourages people to collaborate on experiential programming involving hospitality, food, design, entertainment and technology.

Renowned interior designer Masamichi Katayama of Wonderwall, also responsible for the Tokyo and Dubai places, crafted the form and accoutrements of the 16,500-square-foot, three-story Manhattan space — the largest of the three properties. Each of its floors is marked by unique elements and experiences. The street level will be anchored by a cafe, the “Crafted for Lexus” retail area, and a public gallery space that promises to hold everything; from product concepts to custom exhibitions and installations.

On the second floor sits a full-service restaurant, a cocktail bar and a lounge, all of which, like the café downstairs, will be managed by the Union Square Hospitality Group. The restaurant will offer fine-dining, world-class cuisine in an informal atmosphere. A rotating global chefs-in-residence program will ensure a new dining concept from a different chef will be introduced every four to six months.

Dishes will include starters such as fluke carpaccio, foie gras terrine and Agnolotti. Main dishes will range from duck with salsify, parsnip, and sesame to Halibut in grenobloise and brussel sprouts, as well as beef tenderloin, roasted carrot with feta, tarragon and kumquat, and scallops with bean ragu, chard pesto and sobresada. Desserts will include Mont Blanc yuzu , warm chocolate mousse, tarte tatin with cardamom cream and banoffee.

The top-most level houses a private gallery intended for a “multitude of culturally relevant programming concepts such as full immersion events, art installations, film screenings, panels, performances and other inviting experiences.”

The venue’s design is defined by Lexus’s Takumi craftsmanship, a Japanese term that translates roughly to “artisan.” Some of its standout elements are a wall display with over 1,200 miniature car models, a two-story art installation featuring historic Lexus vehicle parts, and bamboo window screens inspired by Lexus’s spindle grille. Like both the earlier locations, the new design-forward hub will contain signature brand elements but will also reflect a New York City aesthetic.

Which means this new Intersect by Lexus is sure to be quite hip.

Intersect by Lexus – NYC is located at 412 West 14th Street, New York, New York 10014. Its restaurant and café will open in December.
