God of the Ocean

Full Fathom Five

Strom’s new Nethuns II Diving Tourbillon puts a tourbillon in the strangest place imaginable – 200 meters underwater.

The Nethuns II Diving Tourbillon can take a tourbillon cage, spinning in midair, and transport it straight down 200 meters below the waves. The Nethuns II thus becomes a sort of wrist-borne bathysphere, bringing the spinning surface-dwelling tourbillon, literally made to defy gravity, down into a place where gravity takes on a different quality altogether.

Strom’s Nethuns II Diving Tourbillon watch has a case of pink gold, 54mm by 48mm, if you measure it without the two screw-lock crowns. The case holds a mechanical self-winding Vaucher Manufacture AGO-3024 flying tourbillon movement, a variable-inertia balance wheel, twin barrels, and an 18k gold oscillating weight.

The Nethuns II takes its name from Neptune. Neptune was the god of the ocean, a mighty deity indeed when you consider the extent of his realm. Most humans live all their lives on land, breathing air. But the watery world is most of the Earth’s surface, and it extends far, far further than the dry land ever did or ever will. Global warming ensures that our coastlines shrink with every passing year as the ice caps melt. As the ocean grows, so too does the power of Poseidon, as Neptune was known in another culture.

And yet, the Nethuns II of Strom carries within it that little bubble of home, the tourbillon cage. Incongruously, it carries not just the air it spins within but one of the land’s imperatives: fighting gravity is the purpose of the tourbillon, and so even as the Nethuns II dives deeper, it brings with it a touch of the land and the air.
