Breitling’s Timeless Pursuit: A New Era with Universal Genève

Reviving Heritage: Breitling's Strategic Acquisition of Universal Genève

In a groundbreaking development for Swiss watchmaking, Breitling has unveiled its acquisition of Universal Genève, signaling a transformative chapter for the renowned brand synonymous with horological artistry. This strategic move aims to rejuvenate the prestige of a revered name in luxury timepieces.

Breitling CEO Georges Kern expressed excitement about the undertaking while respecting the rich tradition they are positioned to honor. Universal Genève was previously regarded as the couturier of watchmaking, with in-house movements and legendary models. Alfred Gantner, Co-Founder of Partners Group and Chairman of the Breitling Board of Directors, stressed the painstaking labor of love required to rebuild such a complex tale. Kern indicated that a dedicated team will assist the functioning of Breitling and Universal Genève as separate maisons.

Universal Geneve, the new factory inaugurated in 1956, Carouge, municipality in the Canton of Geneva.

Founded in 1894, Universal Genève thrived through the early to mid-20th century with innovative designs and technical prowess. The quartz crisis posed a significant challenge from 1989 when it became part of the Stelux Group. Breitling’s acquisition aims to restore the brand to its former glory, rooted in Swiss tradition yet poised for contemporary relevance.

Breitling’s perfect position to raise Universal Genève was confirmed by Joseph Wong, Chairman and CEO of Stelux Group, citing Breitling’s success with its own marque. Breitling prioritizes history preservation, guaranteeing that Universal Genève goes on not only in name but also in spirit.

A Brief History of Universal Genève: A Legacy Unveiled
1920s: “Precision watches, precision jewelry” – Universal Genève’s early history featured elegant women’s cocktail watches and innovative men’s jewelry timepieces, including the reversible Cabriolet, one of the first of its kind.

1940s: “Accurate time… plus” – At the forefront of chronograph innovation, Universal Genève offered an impressive variety of Compax chronographs with manufacture movements, along with the legendary Tri-Compax full calendar.

1950s: “A triumph of watchmaking” – The Polerouter watch designed to withstand any climate, from the pole to the equator. The revolutionary self-winding movement known as the Microtor was introduced in this decade.

1960s: “Le couturier de la montre” – Universal Genève successfully relaunched its Compax series as sports watches, including the collectors’ favorite “Nina Rindt” chronograph and full-calendar Tri-Compax “Eric Clapton,” nicknamed for their famous wearers. In 1966, the world’s flattest automatic movement, the Golden Shadow, was released.

United by a Shared Past: Breitling and Universal Genève’s Resurgence
This isn’t the first time these two watchmaking giants have crossed paths. As leading specialists in chronographs, they were equal parts rivals and allies. Now, they are set to live side by side once more, maintaining their individuality while honoring a mutual history of ingenuity.

“This revival is a dream turned into a vision,” Kern elaborated. “It’s a process we are embarking on with the utmost respect and dedication with the aim of seeing Universal Genève restored to its rightful place in watchmaking.”
