A Daring Reinterpretation: The Audemars Piguet [RE]Master02

A Contemporary Twist on a Vintage Asymmetry

Audemars Piguet, a name synonymous with horological innovation, has a long history of pushing boundaries. The [RE]Master collection, launched in 2020, embodies this spirit by reinterpreting iconic designs from the Manufacture’s archives. The latest addition, the [RE]Master02, takes inspiration from a rare and captivating timepiece: the 1960s Model 5159BA.

Ref. 5159BA, the 1960 model that inspired [RE]Master02, features a yellow gold case measuring 27.5 mm in diameter. It was produced in only 7 units.

The [RE]Master02’s defining characteristic is its asymmetrical case, crafted from a novel material – sand gold. This 18-carat gold alloy boasts warm hues that shift between white and pink depending on the light. The case itself is a marvel of geometric angles and brushed finishes, creating a captivating interplay of light and shadow. The sharp edges and integrated lugs add a touch of dynamism, while the slope of the sapphire crystal at 3 o’clock further emphasizes the watch’s unconventional form.

The [RE]Master02’s dial is a captivating composition of geometric shapes. Twelve individually machined brass triangles, each boasting a linear satin finish, are meticulously arranged and separated by sand-gold-toned partitions. This intricate construction, achieved using Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD), creates a mesmerizing play of light and depth. The hour and minute hands, crafted in sand gold, echo the case’s warmth, while the absence of hour markers and a date window allows the geometric dance on the dial to take center stage.

Melding geometrical figures, the dial is composed of 12 triangles of different shapes and sizes separated by galvanised sand gold partitions.
With its 18-carat sand gold case and its asymmetrical “Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50” dial, [RE]Master02 is a modern reinterpretation of a brutalist model from 1960.

The [RE]Master02 isn’t just about aesthetics. It houses the ultra-thin Calibre 7129, a derivative of the Calibre 7121 that powers the Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin models. This 2.8 mm movement is a marvel of engineering, boasting a redesigned construction and larger barrel for enhanced precision. The oscillating weight, adorned in sand gold, ensures efficient bi-directional winding, while inertia blocks in the balance wheel minimize aerodynamic friction. Visible through the sapphire caseback, the movement is a testament to Audemars Piguet’s dedication to Haute Horlogerie traditions, featuring exquisite decorations like Côtes de Genève and snailing.

The oscillating weight is equipped with two reversers that convert its bidirectional swings into a unidirectional rotation to wind the mainspring.

The [RE]Master02 is a testament to Audemars Piguet‘s ability to bridge the gap between heritage and contemporary watchmaking. It’s a bold statement piece, a conversation starter that celebrates the beauty of asymmetry and geometric harmony.
