70 Years to Celebrate

Porsche Sportscar

Seventy years is a wonderful milestone to mark. And Porsche has decided to do it splendidly, honoring their milestone with the 70 Years Porsche Sportscar special exhibition. Doors opened on June 8, and Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG, Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG and Uwe Hück, Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG, along with other guests, were all on hand to look back on birth of Porsche brand and their subsequent automotive achievements.

On June 8, 1948 Porsche Roadster 356 “No. 1” received general operating permit, and the rest (pardon the cliché) is history. Porsche has become the synonym for an excellent sporty driving experience and way of thinking, while the leading the pack in automotive innovation, design, and functionality.

The exhibit highlights milestones  and outstanding Porsche developments in the 70-year history. The 75 different displays honored their past while anticipating their future, from the legendary Porsche 356 “No. 1” Roadster from 1948 to the purely electric Porsche Mission E. Beginning the exhibit with the 70-year old “No. 1” Roadster is a perfect introduction to the history of the automotive brand. Impressive and also heartwarming – Porsche is one of the few automobile manufacturers in the world to have the original first vehicle ever built by the brand in its possession.

As each decade since their beginning passed, Porsche developed and tested new technologies. Their principle – shaping ‘the future of the sports car’ – is evident in their work with the electrically powered forays. The Mission E, the first purely electrically powered Porsche, will be launched in the market in 2019, has benefited from the experience the car techs gained from working on the Le Mans-winning 919 Hybrid. They don’t rest on their laurels, they keep moving forward.

The exhibition focuses on the company’s strong cultural values of pioneering spirit, sportiness, and family. Emphasis is also put on the employees, racing drivers, and friends of Porsche that have all helped building this company into what it is today. After all, what is a company, automotive or otherwise, without the hands and hearts that create it and the people who appreciate it?

There is more than one way to celebrate a milestone, and Porsche has pulled out al the stops for their 70th. After opening the 70 Years Porsche Sportscar special exhibition on June 8, the festivities continued on June 9 as Porsche fans were invited to the Sports Car Together Day at all of its sites across the globe. June 10th saw yet another extension of the celebration as Porsche hosted a grand celebration at the Cannstatter Wasen festival grounds. Fathers had a special Father’s Day weekend if they had the chance to visit the public celebration in and around the plant based around Porscheplatz in Zuffenhausen – the festival included plant tours, bands, food trucks, and the live coverage of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and for those sports fans among them, the broadcast of the Germany-Mexico World Cup game.

And if you think Porsche only celebrated in June, you’d be happily mistaken as the celebrations run through til October. The Festival of Speed will be held at the Goodwood race track in the UK from July 12-15 and the Rennsport Reunion in California will mark the anniversary from September 27-30. The 70 Years Porsche Sportscar celebrations will come to an end on October 13, with the Sound Night event in the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart. Find your way to one of these events and celebrate the 70 years of Porsche as only they know how.
