Hammerhead

Ulysse Nardin’s quintessential marine instrument is made more powerful with a new movement

For nearly two centuries, Ulysse Nardin has steered captains and their crews to their destinations with the faultless precision of every marine chronometer the award winning watchmaker has ever produced. In the same vein, nature has produced one of world’s most amazing natural navigators, the hammerhead shark, which has navigated the depths of the oceans with uncanny accuracy for millions of years.

The Le Locle watchmaker once again pays homage, not only to its own seafaring past, but also to one of the ocean’s most magnificent seafarers with this, the newest addition to its coveted Marine Collection, the Diver Chronograph Hammerhead Shark.

Even in the natural world, Hammerhead sharks are unique. They spend their days swimming above their seamount and setting off at night to feed only to return together to the same spot. Hammerheads are the only sharks known to do this. And because of the shape of their expanded heads, hammerhead sharks posses the sharpest sensory accuracy of all shark species. Thus, they are renowned for their supreme navigational precision and are the true kings of ocean navigation. Indeed, as a symbol of the Diver collection, the hammerhead shark is a natural choice; it is the evolution of nature’s most successful design and is one of the top predators of its kind.

Making its debut in this new Ulysse Nardin seafaring predator is the self-winding manufacture chronograph caliber UN-150 with silicium escapement and balance spring. Thus, making the Diver Chronograph Hammerhead Shark representative of the evolution of the entire Diver collection.

The limited edition Diver Chronograph Hammerhead Shark comes in 300 pieces in stainless steel and 99 pieces in 18K rose gold. Exceptionally nautical as only Ulysse Nardin can make it, both versions sport a deep blue dial with the brand’s signature hammerhead shark motif. Indeed, all 44 mm of the watch’s oversized case, its 48-hour power reserve, its screw-locked crown, pushers, solid lugs, and unidirectional turning bezel make the Diver Chronograph Hammerhead Shark essential equipment for any excursion into the underwater world.

And aside from rugged dependability, this new Hammerhead also offers supreme readability. The 30-minute counter is located at 3 o’clock. At 6 o’clock sit the date and 12-hour counter. And at 9 o’clock is where the small seconds makes its home. Performance is akin to its watery namesake as well with water resistance up to 300 meters, wrist stability and ease of time tracking and measurement.

An appropriately bloody red complements the most notable elements of the dial including the luminous indexes, watch hands and even the lone shark. The bezel is made to stand out in its characteristic wave pattern, which is further emphasized by the ornamentation impressed into the rubber band. Turn the watch over and more sharks are seen swimming within the Diver Chronograph Hammerhead Shark, specifically on the azure rotor visible through the open sapphire crystal caseback.

Ulysse Nardin has always had a connection to the sea. A manufacture of superb marine timepieces, it is ready to wade into deeper waters with the execution of its in-house movement in the Diver collection. Since the hammerhead shark is a symbol of power in its underwater world, the Diver Chronograph Hammerhead Shark is the appropriate symbol of this milestone.
