Swiss Picks

You don’t need to be Swiss or in the military to appreciate these watches.

Founded in Switzerland in 1963 by Hans Noll, Hanowa established its aesthetic as rugged. In 1990, the brand expanded into Swiss Military Hanowa and made the rugged aesthetic its signature style. The sports watches are tough and handsome, and best of all, nicely priced. The ‘Swiss Military’ addition to the name highlights the values of the Swiss armed forces that they wish to embody: robustness, endurance, high precision, and the ability to function in extreme conditions.

The brand is also officially licensed by the Swiss Confederation for the high standard of quality it has maintained since its foundation. Not all brands receive this recognition, and the brand takes this seriously and strives to excel with each timepiece they create.

Let’s take a closer look at these Swiss Military Hanowa timepieces. And no, you don’t need to be Swiss or in the military to appreciate these watches.

Ace Chrono
The Ace Chrono features a racing theme within its 44mm. As with all chronographs, this watch allows you to track time data easily. The bezel’s tachymeter emphasizes the sporty look. The watch has an elapsed-seconds hand, a continually running seconds function, a 30-minute display, and a day-of-the-week indicator. The red highlights on the dial and hands are a nice touch. Available in stainless steel or with black IP or gun IP, with leather straps or a stainless steel bracelet.

Chrono Classic
The Chrono Classic is a cleaner version of the previous watch, and would suit the gentleman who prefers a more toned-down sporty style. The baton hour markers, date display, three dials for seconds, 30-minute counter, and the analog day indicator sound like a lot to be on a watch, but the Chrono Classic makes it work. Available in a stainless steel with a stainless steel link bracelet or a stitched leather strap.

Black Carbon
The Black Carbon is perfect for the rough and tumble man who seeks, nay, yearns, for adventure. The watch will take whatever challenge you throw at it, and will come out looking wonderful still. The high-tech carbon case is big but lightweight so it’ll do the job without wearing you down. The luminous hands are easily visible against the black dial and the date window is at the 3 o’clock. As expected of this manly watch, it is water resistant. The strap is silicon with a stitched textile top-layer.

Patrol
The patrol is distinct because of its sculpted rotating bezel, color matched with the dial, and easy to use even with gloves on. The hour and minute hands are pierced adding a sense of finesse. Available in stainless steel with a link bracelet or a silicone strap in blue or black.

Nautila Gents
It seems the ladies came first with this one, as the Nautila Gents was made to complement the Nautila Ladies collection. Don’t let the watch’s understated looks fool you. The watch is sleek and impressive, no doubt partly due to its massive link bracelet. The three-hand watch gives you form, function, and style. Available in stainless steel with accents in various colors.

The offerings of Swiss Military Hanowa are perfect for the rugged man. While the country is known for its neutrality, no one can be neutral about these watches. They are a favorite. The only problem is choosing one, but thanks to the friendly prices, you can easily walk away with two or three.
