Spikes on the Field

TAG Heuer becomes the official timekeeper and the official watch of the CONMEBOL Libertadores for the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

This means that, starting January of 2018, TAG Heuer will be keeping time for all of the matches organized by the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores competition. Not only will TAG Heuer be watching the clock for the games, but CONMEBOL’s professional referees will be equipped with TAG Heuer Connected smartwatches, and these smartwatches will have a special app installed to support them in tracking time during the game itself. This will bring real-time sports adjudication to a new level, and TAG Heuer Connected will be right there on the field with it.

Jean-Claude Biver, TAG Heuer CEO and President of the LVMH Watch Group Division, has this to say about the CONMEBOL Libertadores competition: “With football, we communicate passion, emotion, team spirit, strategy, victory! Values that are also carried by our brand and more importantly by the people who buy and wear our watches.”

Alejandro Dominguez, CONMEBOL President, said “TAG Heuer has an established heritage in sports, with both a track record of excellence and an attitude that constantly seeks to conquer new challenges.”

The CONMEBOL Libertadores is the most prestigious football club competition in South America, a heady claim when football passions run so high that it is not just a national obsession but one that is continent-wide. The competition dates back to the year 1960, when it was called the Copa de Campeones de America. This competition has been played every year since then, and in the present day it is played almost year-long. The tournament starts in February and ends in November. (They get Christmas time off, which is something.) 47 professional men’s club teams qualify annually based on their performance in the national leagues of 10 member nations: Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
